Independente desde 15 de Agosto de 1947, depois de uma longa luta pela liberdade, levada a cabo pelo Congresso Nacional Indiano, fundado em 1885.

Jawaharal Nehru (1889-1964) governa de 1947 até à morte. A filha, Indira Gandhi (1917-1984) governa em 1966-1967 e em 1980-1984.
